iOS 16 live stream lag

We have a Raspberry Pi streaming live h.264 video. On the iPad Pro, we connect to the Pi’s local WiFi hotspot and use Safari (primarily) and Chrome to view the stream.

In iOS 15, it was near real-time (awesome).

Under iOS 16, the lag is near 5 seconds (not awesome whatsoever) regardless of which browser we use. So, the issue arose from the OS change.

Tried removing all experimental features for Safari with no success.

Any ideas or suggestions?

I believe this is an issue potentially related to decoding. This is not a browser related issue because under iPadOS 15, multiple browsers, including Safari, Google Chrome, Duck Duck Go, etc we’re all able to view a live h.264 transmission at full frame rate and without any lags. Now, under iOS 16, ALL browsers experience a significant lag time in addition to a (highly) reduced frame rate.

As individual browsers are not permitted to utilize their own rendering engines, they are ALL affected by OS changes that restrict, disable or hinder features.

The “experimental webkit settings” page is perhaps very poorly named - as this page includes advanced settings that influence many key configuration items.  Many of these settings operate with reverse logic - and are in fact disabled when apparently “set” to ON.

Unless you know exactly what you are doing, you would be well advised to leave these settings well alone; setting everything to OFF will have profound impact upon both security and performance. Selecting Reset All to Defaults will restore default Webkit settings.
