Siri, My Music, and Apple Music Changes with Recent iOS Updates

I have 8249 songs in my iTunes library that I sync with an iPhone 12 and an iPad 8G. Every single one of those songs are mine, I ripped them from CDs into MP3s then converted over to AAC, or downloaded and did the same. I have never used Apple Music, I have absolutely no interest or need whatsoever in using Apple Music, whether it's a free trial or a paid subscription.

I have Apple CarPlay and use it all of the time for a number of things while I'm driving, most of which are safety and law related. One of my favorite things to do is to just hit the button on the steering wheel and tell Siri to play a specific song, album, playlist, etc. I've been doing it for years without issue. Well, it's not perfect, sometimes it will play the wrong song or a different version, or you have to rename an album in iTunes in order for Siri to pick it up. But all of those things are manageable.

After the big iOS 16 update, something happened where whenever I tried to play a specific song or album, Siri would say "you'll have to update your Apple Music subscription to do that". It would play playlists fine, but requests for specific songs, albums, etc. would get me that prompt. I eventually figured out that the update had toggled on Apple Music, when I toggled it back off, some but not all of those issues went away. At that time I called Apple and chatted with a rep who told me that this was a known issue that would be resolved in the next point release.

So along comes iOS 16.1, and things seem to be going backwards. Now without my permission I have been enrolled in a 7 day trial of Apple Music, with no option to turn off or opt out of that trial. Now when I ask Siri to play a specific song, I get the prompt "hope you're enjoying your Apple Music trial, this will work now but you'll need to update your subscription when the trial is over in order to do that". Do what? Get Siri to play one of my own songs? Come on.

If this is a ploy by Apple to force me to sign up for Apple Music, it won't work. I'll just create a BILLION playlists and work around it that way. It ***** because this is a key feature of Music that I have enjoyed in my car using Siri and CarPlay for years. And I can't for the life of me understand why Apple would be taking this away unless I sign up for Apple Music, because, again, I have my own music, I don't need Apple Music. I just need Siri to play my music. What am I missing here?

I guess that we will see what happens when my Apple Music trial is over. Is anyone else out there in a similar situation and can shed some light or recommendations on this situation?

Appreciate any input besides "get Apple Music" :)

Same thing happened to me. All I did was say Hey Siri play some music. Usually Siri would play free radio or say I dont have subscription. Today siri didnt even ask if I want to subscribe and just started trial by itself. The fact that Siri made this decision by itself even if its free trial is a violation. I mean what if I had said something else and Siri would just subscribe to that service costing money. I know auto renewal is turned off on this particular case.

this is second time Apple has done something as a violation. In ios 15 they turned off my daily cash that we get on Apple credit card and unless I sign up for Cash card by providing all details like Social, address etc. they wont show me the daily cash. Now Apple credit card is issued by Goldman Sachs and cash card is someone else. Why would I give my personal detail to another party to use my own cash.

I am seriously thinking about class action now, there was another incident but I wont go in that. Its ridiculous and not expected from Apple.

Exact same thing happened to me after downloading iOS 16.1. I asked Siri to play a song I own (downloaded from Apple last year) using Apple CarPlay just as I do almost everyday, and she stated "working on it" twice. Thought it was odd she repeated it and that is apparently when I was signed up for the 7 day free trial. I can't find any way to cancel the subscription. Hoping this doesn't auto renew and charge my Apple card.

I usually wait for new updates when Apple forces it on me. I only downloaded iOS 16.1 for the new heart rate zones on my Apple watch for OTF HIIT classes. Never again.

Yes. This is a n"if it aint broke, don't fix it" situation. Some genius at Apple thought this was a good way to get people to start using Apple Music. I rip all my own music. I don't need streaming low resolution tunes. Siri, stop being jerk and play the music in my library. Quit being a shill for the corporate bean counters at Apple. LOL

This happened to me today. I was looking for some info about this issue and found this discussion.

I was on my car with Apple CarPlay and asked Siri to play a Guns N' Roses' song which I ripped years ago from my CD (like thousands of other songs in my library). It begun playing... but not from my playlist but from Apple Music, also telling me I have begun a 7 day trial. What?? What's the point?

I immediately stopped the song and asked Siri again to "play it FROM my library not Apple Music" which somehow worked. Do I really have to specify I want to play MY song which is stored locally in my iPhone rather than streaming it from Apple Music? Seriously?

The same thing happened to me yesterday while I was in the car. All I did was to tell Siri to play a song from my music library by name, she misunderstood and immediately jumped to the Apple Music catalog, in which I have zero interest, and signed me up!

I have 3500 songs in my library which, like you, I paid for and either imported, downloaded or transferred myself from my last device over the last 20+ years. I am also unhappy that there is no way to turn off Apple Music on any device. You used to be able to toggle it off - though it would be back on the next day.

Time to take a look at your totalitarian ways, Apple! :(
