I started using WiFi to migrate data from a 2014 macbook air to a macbook air 2017 and it has taken ages and is still running almost 10 hours later. What do I need to do to speed it up? I have them alongside each other connected to power. I now see that I should have used a cable and connected them that way, but what would the procedure be now and what cable would I require? Thanks for your help.

Does it matter which thunderbolt version? Sorry I'm really green about this and see that there are different numbered thunderbolt ports. can I just buy a thunderbolt cable and it will fit the 2014 MBAir and the 2017?

You need to get Thunderbolt to Thunderbolt cable to connect each MacBook Air Thunderbolt port and run Migration Assistant should works.
