Message History and iCloud Messages Sync

Hi,

I’m a little confused about the Message History setting on my iPhone. Messages are taking up a lot of space on my iPhone as it’s set to ‘Keep Messages: Forever’.

If I change this to 30 days, will messages older than 30 days old be removed from my iCloud (and then my MacBook) too?

Or will iCloud keep a backup and only sync the past 30 days of messages to my iPhone?

Thanks!

iPhone 11 Pro, iOS 16

Hello lawrence89,

Thank you for reaching out to Apple Support Communities, and we'll be happy to help in any way we can. We understand you have questions about Messages in iCloud. If you delete messages on your device they will be deleted in iCloud as well. You can find more information about this here: Use Messages in iCloud - Apple Support

"When you turn on Messages in iCloud, your message history is updated automatically on all of your devices. That way, you always have the same view everywhere you use iMessage. When you delete a message, photo, or conversation on one device, it’s removed from all of your devices. And since all of your attachments are stored in iCloud, you can save space on your device."

We hope this helps.

Cheers!
