If I delete an old phones iCloud backup do I lose contacts and music?

You don’t lose anything when you delete an iCloud backup, other than the backup itself. If you needed to restore a backup for some reason and you don’t have one to restore, then you will be in trouble. But the act of deleting an iCloud backup does not delete anything that is on your device.

If you delete the old iCloud backup, I suggest that you create a new one.
