Camera not dectected in third party apps for Intel based Mac

After upgrading to Ventura on a MacBook Pro Intel i9, I am running into an issue with a couple people that the camera is not being detected in third party programs such as Slack, WebEx and Chrome

The camera works fine in Safari and Facetime and when loading pages like Google Meet, Zoom etc, the camera works, but when loading the same pages in Chrome, nothing

We've tried a variety of troubleshooting other than erase and install of the entire OS

  1. PRAM and SMC resets
  2. Reinstall the software
  3. Clearing the user library files in Application Support and Preferences for third party apps
  4. Re-doing the sharing of permissions in System Settings, and confirming that Privacy/Security and Camera is enabled for everything
  5. Checking Screentime settings
  6. Trying to kill the VDC assistant via sudo killall VDCAssistant
  7. Booting to safe mode
  8. Using recovery mode to install on top of the OS
  9. All software is up to date and no available updates

Does anyone have any other ideas or run into this as well? I would prefer not to erase if possible for myself and others but I'm at a loss for next steps

Thanks @DataAndBeyond - That solved it for me on the M1 Mac. I suspect the intel macs might have a separate problem with Chrome.

Slight correction for directory removal:

sudo rm -rf /Library/CoreMediaIO/Plug-Ins/DAL/RelayCam.plugin

This issue definitely affects both Slack and Chrome.

  • CPU: Intel i9
  • GPU: Radeon Pro 5500M
  • OS: Ventura 13.0
  • Chrome: Version 107.0.5304.87 (Official Build) (x86_64)

I also tried Chrome Beta - Version 108.0.5359.30 (Official Build) beta (x86_64), but no luck.

I also connect another external USB camera to my MacBook Pro, but neither Slack nor Chrome can detect the USB camera, even though both the built-in and USB camera's microphones work smoothly.

Facetime & Safari are working fine with both the built-in and the USB camera in Ventura.

This seems like an incompatible API change of Ventura that Slack and Chrome have to upgrade/catch up.
