Can't airdrop to Macbook Air - "waiting"

Hi, this year I upgraded my phone to an iPhone 12 running iOS 15.6.1, and my laptop to a Macbook Air 2020 running Monterey. I can no longer air drop items e.g. photos, voice recordings, from my phone to my laptop; when I click on share and then the icon for the laptop, it just says "waiting." I am able to airdrop to my old laptop, a Macbook Air 2015 running Mojave. This suggests to me it's a problem with the settings on my new laptop but I can't figure out what. I've set airdrop settings to findable by everyone on both devices; turned the firewall off and on; unblocked "incoming connections," automatically allowed built in and downloaded software to receive incoming connections. I've powered both devices on and off many times (the problem has persisted for months.) Any idea how to fix this problem?

Hi gregg98,

You've done some great troubleshooting so far!

On this page about using AirDrop with a Mac, there are a couple of other things to check out. Start with the first step, then test, before moving on to the next two:

If you can't see the other device in AirDrop
1. Make sure that both devices are within 30 feet (9 meters) of each other and have Wi-Fi and Bluetooth turned on.

2. Choose Go > AirDrop from the menu bar in the Finder, then check the ”Allow me to be discovered by” setting in the AirDrop window. iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch have a similar setting. If set to receive from Contacts Only, both devices must be signed in to iCloud, and the email address or phone number associated with the sender's Apple ID must be in the Contacts app of the receiving device.

3. Make sure that incoming connections aren't blocked in firewall settings:
• macOS Ventura or later: Choose Apple menu  > System Settings. Click Network in the sidebar, then click Firewall on the right. Click the Options button, then make sure that “Block all incoming connections” is turned off.
• Earlier versions of macOS: Choose Apple menu  > System Preferences, then click Security & Privacy. Click the Firewall tab, then click the lock  and enter your administrator password when prompted. Click Firewall Options, then make sure that “Block all incoming connections” is deselected.
