My MacBook Pro display is showing only a file with a question mark

It’s not switching on it’s only showing a file with a question mark on

That means the computer cannot find a valid boot volume:


If your Mac starts up to a question mark - Apple Support


It could mean the hard drive/SSD is corrupted or failing, or not physically connected depending on model.


As Macbook Pros changed from mechanical hard drive to solid-state drives (SSD startign in 2012), it will help us better advise you if you tell us the sub-model, the part with a year. As the computer will not start, find your serial number on the case bottom. You will likely need a magnifier to read it; it is in a very tiny font:



⚠️ DO NOT post the serial number here for security reasons. Go to this Apple support page and enter the number:


Check Your Service and Support Coverage - Apple Support


The return should give your sub-model information like this:



Again, DO NOT post a serial number, just the sub-model name just as shown in the about image.
