iMAC stuck in boot up

I was trying to reset the password my daughter forgot and used a non-MAC keyboard the iMAC starts up but only has the Apple in the middle and a spinning wheel under it and advice on getting it back working?

Please attempt to restart in Safe Mode per the directions in Safe Mode. If that does not work, try using an Apple keyboard (or any third party Mac keyboard) and see if you were just using a wrong keyboard combination, that is guess though as you did not indicate what keys you may have been depressing on startup.


Also, simply unplug the computer from power for about 2 minutes, then re-connect and restart and continue holding down the power button for about 15 seconds.

I got an Apple keyboard now and was trying to reload the IOS on the partitioned part of the drive but there were errors on the main hard drive and it told me to erase it and reload the IOS so I erased the drive now all it will do is boot to the utility on line but will not allow me to load "Lion" ! Thanks for your help but I think it is off to the dump with this brick I am just not familiar with the iMAC to make it work again!
