when a sony heif file is imported onto iCloud the thumbnails show as a heat map image. The full file display correctly. It is the thumbnails which are the problem. Is this an iCloud sync issue?

Do you see this issue with just your Sony-derived images, or HEIF images from other sources? Can you replicate the problem with another iPad? Consider visiting your local Apple Store or Apple Authorised Retailer - where you will have access to other devices to test. I’ve only got sony heif files to test with but have replicated this on my iPhone also.
it appears to be a bit random also as I have had some files that have actually displayed fine and others that don’t even out of a burst of pictures.
I think I’ll book an appointment at a Genius Bar to show then and see if they can make any further suggestions
