Messenger iOS 16 use different Apple ID not working

I have two Apple IDs. My spouse and I share an Apple ID that we consider our "main" Apple ID so that we have equal and seamless access to family photos, contacts, calendar, notes etc. For most situations this works well for our lifestyle, as we do everything together. For Messenger, however, I want to be logged in under the other Apple ID so people know which one of us they are messaging with.

In previous iOS iterations, this is easily set up, by going to Settings>Messages>Send & Receive, then tapping on the Apple ID at the bottom of the list, signing out of the current Apple ID, tap "Use your Apple ID for iMessage", and finally signing back in with a different Apple ID. This is how I have it set up on my iPad with iPados 15.

Since upgrading my iPhone to iOS 16, the last step listed above doesn't work...the sign in box greys out for a minute or so, then the phone signs itself back in to the "main" Apple ID that I just signed out of.

This only happens under the Messages settings screen. Elsewhere, I am able to sign in and out of either Apple ID with no problems.

Anyone else experiencing this?

Hi gordsinbc,

We appreciate you reaching out to us. We understand that you are no longer able to use a secondary Apple ID for iMessage.

We recommend that you tell us about your experience on our feedback link.

While this is not a direct answer to what you would like to accomplish, we'd like you to know that it is possible to use different phone numbers for iMessage.

If you and your spouse have iPhones with different phone numbers, you can disable your shared Apple ID for iMessage an FaceTime.

Then, enable your phone number on your iPhone. Also, ask your spouse to perform the same steps.

By enabling just the phone number for each devices, you and your spouse can send and receive iMessages through your phone numbers while sharing the same Apple ID.

Take care!

Thank you for the reply. And thank you for the workaround suggestion, disabling Apple ID on our respective phones. I’ve done that, but now my iPad Messages app doesn’t sync with my iPhone Messages app due to the disconnect with iCloud. So, not a great workaround for me.

Honestly, this is very frustrating as it worked like a charm in iOS 15 and earlier. Messages is a core app and for it to be broken by an upgrade is really disappointing. Small bugs are expected but basic functionality should be able to be relied upon.

I will post the problem on the feedback link you provided. Thanks again for the reply.

Hello gordsinbc,

If you want to share items, Family Sharing was designed for that, but you still need to use your own Apple ID: Make sure that each family member has a unique Apple ID - Apple Support

"Apple recommends that you do not share your Apple ID. Instead, set up Family Sharing so that each person uses their own Apple ID. This way, your family can share purchases, subscriptions, and more without sharing personal information like email, text messages, or passwords."

Since you already have an Apple ID doing this, see if this option will help you now: Use a different Apple ID to share purchases with Family Sharing - Apple Support

Thanks.
