How can I allow Safari to browse websites during downtime?

How can I allow Safari to browse websites during downtime? I want to use downtime to limit other use cases on my child’s device. But I still want them to be able browse the web so they can look up topics for school. But even when Safari is “allowed” during Screen Time, iOS blocks all traffic in Safari. (This doesn’t make any sense. Why have “allow” as an option but the primary use case of the app is completely disabled?)

Scheduled downtime is downtime from everything. You need to put time restrictions on the other apps and allow unlimited time on safari. Then add the downtime for when you want them off of the actual iPad/iPhone. I hope this helps.

Hi TJHordak,

You could try allowing certain websites to be allowed as seen below, which may allow your child to browse Safari:

"Prevent web content

iOS and iPadOS can automatically filter website content to limit access to adult content in Safari and other apps on your device. You can also add specific websites to an approved or blocked list, or you can limit access to only approved websites. Follow these steps:

  1. Go to Settings and tap Screen Time.
  2. Tap Content & Privacy Restrictions and enter your Screen Time passcode.
  3. Tap Content Restrictions, then tap Web Content.
  4. Choose Unrestricted Access, Limit Adult Websites, or Allowed Websites.

Depending on the access you allow, you might need to add information, like the website that you want to restrict."

That information, and more, can be found here: Use parental controls on your child's iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch - Apple Support

Let us know what you find if you alter those settings.

Take care!
