I have the 2021 iMac m1. 1 TB SSD, 8 gigs ram...... waking up to: "your computer was restarted because of a problem": This is only after sitting in sleep mode for an undetermined amount of time. My crash log starts like this:

panic(cpu 2 caller 0xfffffe00205bb120): Sleep transition timed out after 35 seconds while calling power state change callbacks. Suspected bundle: com.apple.iokit.IOUSBMassStorageDriver. Thread 0x74bc6.

Debugger message: panic

Apple several mornings of waking up to a computer crash I decided to contact support(3x now). They want me to drive 80 miles to the nearest Apple store for warranty repairs. Apparently they don't allow customers to ship iMacs back to them for warranty or repairs. iMacs only too big I guess!!! rrrrrg

Steps I've taken:

1. I've booted into safe mode the problem reoccurs

2. I've reinstalled the OS after a full wipe choosing not to backup anything. Just a clean install no apps whatsoever...Problem reoccurs

3. Before safe mode and reinstall I thought it was a software issue since I found some crashes in Utilities/Console. I uninstalled all the software. And tried the above steps again.

I don't have anything plugged into my mac just the wireless bluetooth mouse and touchpad that came with it.

UPDATE:

My last comment was incorrect. I did have something plugged into the back of the computer. I was using a different mouse than the trackpad. So I used a USB C to A hub, and without thinking I also plugged in an external drive. So fare with the external unplugged I have not had the reboot for 2 days. I almost feel ignorant I didn't catch this originally after a full reinstall. The older slower spinning drives must have an issue when the computer tries to sleep. Maybe a delay that kicks in the reboot or crash, maybe something else. I'll keep testing with it unplugged... and consider upgrading to something more current.

Still important that Apple looks into this. I know I'm not the only one using an older external spinning drive for backups.....

Anyway thanks for my rant, and hopefully this helps another person. Feel free to comment if you've been through this issue.
