FW800 to FW400

In all fairness to Apple, a FW800 to FW400 should work but it doesn't work on mine.

My cables are brand new.

None of the 4-ports on my 5,1 can see my Saffire Pro 40.

I have tried everything in almost every thread except using the Allegro FW400 PCIe card.

I have tried other PCIe FW400 cards with no success.

My Mac see's them but they don't see my Saffire Pro 40.

My 3,1 see's them with no problem or disconnections.

That said, I can rule out cables and devices.

The machine is 10 years old and it just may be that the FW800 ports need a little TLC.

I haven't look at the connectors and how they connect to the motherboard.

They seem to have play in them and might need soldering, if that's the case, I will pull it apart and fix them.

If it is possible and works, I will post it.

Has anyone had any success in conquering the FW400 issue on the 5,1?

Any advice would be appreciated!

Sure sounds like the drivers need and on the Mac are not compatible with High Sierra but are with El Capitan.

That is not unusual since about that time Apple required that drivers be specifically signed for each specific macOS versions in order to be installed. Sometimes that even applied for dot version changes. I remember this since I was using an Nvidia 1060 video card in my 4.1>5.1 and very periodically had to download new drivers for dot version changes.

I have successfully used FW800>FW400 adapter and cable on my 4.1 Mac Pro, 2012 Mac Mini and even with my 2013 Mac Pro (using TB2>FR800 adapter) w/o problems with a external HD and Apple's old FW camera.

WIth the Saffire Pro 40 connected via adopter to native FW800 port on the Mac click on the Apple icon in upper ledt and selected About this Mac>System Report>Hardware>Firewire. Does it show anything connected to the FR800 port?

What macOS version on the 5.1? On the 3.1? Maybe you need drives and the drivers do not work on the macOS version the 5.1.

It's a 2009 4,1 flashed to 5,1.

It has 4/FW800 ports but none of them work.

I tried that, can't see it in system information.

I can see that the Mac drivers are installed.

I agree, it should work seamlessly but it doesn't.

I did manage to get it to work when I downgraded to El Capitan but as soon as I upgraded to High Sierra it stopped working.

I tried a Startech FW400 PCIe card but that doesn't recognize it either. I see the Startech drivers but that's it.

It claims to have the TI-chipset but it's for windows 10 and may work on older macs.

I will test it on my 2,1.

I also have a G5, a 2,1 and a 3,1 and they all work perfect so I can rule out all cables and interfaces.

My intuition tells me that the ports could be shot or the board has some issues.

I hear that Allegro makes a card that should solve the problem, do you know of any?

In the worst case, I will have to replace the FW800 ports or the board or both.

It's not that hard, it's just a pain...
