i need text messages from this old phone

my old iphone x is broken. screen barley visible. i need to retrieve my text messages to my new phone

You have to be syncing Messages with iCloud to retrieve the messages to your new phone. If you are syncing using iCloud, on the new phone, sign into Settings/Your Name using the same Apple ID, and then go to iCloud to turn Messages syncing on. Next go to Settings/Messages and sign in with the same Apple ID.
