Watch won’t pair without update but won’t update

I’ve been trying to connect a new watch ( series 3)to my iPhone for a day or two now but everytime I go to pair it it says I must update. The update takes forever and then never gets past “preparing”. I’ve even tried waiting over night, restarting both my phone and the watch, and deleting all previous Watch info on my phone. Please help because I can’t seem to use my watch without the update to 8.7.1

Has anyone found a solution to this issue? We are having the exact same problem. The “fix” suggested seems totally useless.

Hello Hm_s,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities. You've tried some great troubleshooting steps so far. Since you are not having any luck updating your Apple Watch from your iPhone, see if you can update from your Apple Watch instead. The following steps are from Update your Apple Watch - Apple Support

"Update directly on your Apple Watch

If your Apple Watch has watchOS 6 or later, you can install subsequent updates without your iPhone:

  1. Make sure that your watch is connected to Wi-Fi.
  2. On your watch, open the Settings app.
  3. Tap General > Software Update.
  4. Tap Install if a software update is available, then follow the onscreen instructions."

Take care.
