how to backup iPhone to external hard drive?

Hi:

I have maxed out my iPhone storage and my mac hard drive storage.

I'd like to backup my iPhone to an external hard drive attached to my MAC. I don't see an option to do this. How can I set this up? I don't have any room on my MacBook pro to backup my phone onto my hard drive, but I have plenty of external hard drive space.

There are unofficial ways to do this, and they do work. But as it isn’t a supported feature you need to do a web search for something like moving an iPhone backup to an external drive. It’s a little tricky, and uses Terminal, but it isn’t difficult if you follow the instructions.
