Word document not saving on ipad

I am having problems saving a Word document on my iPad. I was revising a long document for a friend. Although I tried saving multiple copies to different locations (iCloud, on the iPad itself, GoogleDocs), when I go to open any of the files, they all come up empty. This is depressing as I spent hours on the doc, and it looks like all is lost.

How am I supposed to save these documents, and how can I recover what I worked on?
