Music Controls (F7, F8, F9) Not Working for Apple Music on a 2021 MBP 14"

For some reason I cannot control Apple Music using the F7, F8, and F9 keys (back, play/pause, forward) on my 2021 MBP 14". The volume buttons work fine.

I also made sure the "Use F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys" is unchecked in System Preferences - keyboard.

Perhaps on a related note, when I'm using Apple Music on my 2021 MBP 14" the menu bar controls do not work.

Thanks in advance for any help.

With what you're describing, we'd recommend running a diagnostics test. Here's how to do that per Use Apple Diagnostics to test your Mac - Apple Support

Apple silicon

  1. Turn on your Mac and continue to press and hold the power button as your Mac starts up.
  2. Release when you see the startup options window, which includes a gear icon labeled Options.
  3. Press Command (⌘)-D on your keyboard.

Intel processor

  1. Turn on your Mac, then immediately press and hold the D key on your keyboard as your Mac starts up.
  2. Release when you see a progress bar or you're asked to choose a language.

Thank you for the reply shaner41!

To clarify, does this only occur when an external monitor is connected? If you remove the external monitor, do the keys work as expected? This can help us isolate the problem.

If this only occurs when an external monitor is connected, let's test to see if this occurs in safe mode. Starting up your Mac in safe mode can help you identify whether issues you’re experiencing are caused by software that loads as your Mac starts up.

How to use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support

Apple silicon
1. Shut down your Mac.
2. Turn on your Mac and continue to press and hold the power button until you see the startup options window.
3. Select your startup disk, then press and hold the Shift key while clicking “Continue in Safe Mode.”
4. Log in to your Mac. You might be asked to log in again.

It may take longer to finish the start up, as safe mode does some system checks, and can sometimes resolve issues. You may also see some differences in the display. This is expected with safe mode, and when you restart normally, they'll be gone. Test, restart normally, and test again.

Keep us posted.
