Is there a way to update Apple Watch Series 6 to iOS watch 9 paired to iPhone 7 plus?

Updating my Apple Watch Series 6 to iOS watch 9 repeatedly fails (I have 8.7 ) my iphone is a 7 plus and heard that it won't work with new watch IOS. Is that true?

You need an iphone 8 or higher.

it don't work because watchOS 9 requires the phone to run ios16 which iphone7 don't support
