My Imac is connected to the internet however when I try to download software update an error message appears saying you must connect to the internet first. How do I address this?
First thing to try is to restart in Safe Mode followed by a normal startup.
If no improvement, turn the router off for 30 seconds then turn it back on again.

Thanks Mal-5, I’ve tried a reset and start up in safe mode followed by a normal start with no luck. Still received the same error message.
Will now try turning off the modem .
