Copy files from Time Machine backup with malware?

I had malware on my iMac, which caused display problems. I deleted the problem file and backed up with Time Machine, but the display issues continued. Hardware tested fine, so an Apple tech erased my drive and reinstalled the OS, which fixed the problem. I restored most of my files from an older Time Machine backup that was on a separate drive. But I need some files that are on the malware backup. Is it safe to copy/paste individual files from that Time Machine drive? Or do I risk reinfection just by connecting that drive to my Mac? Advice/recommendations appreciated!

Use the /Applications/Time Machine application to restore specific files or folders from your TM backup. Easier to locate things than digging around in the TM drive hierarchy.
