Photos not showing in messages contact screen

After upgrading to iOS 16, the photos shown in messages related to certain contacts disappeared. How do I get those photos to show up under the contacts again?

For example, when you are in a text message screen and you click on a contacts name at the top, it shows all the photos that have been exchanged in that conversation, however most of the photos in that conversation are now missing after upgrading to iOS 16. They still show up in the conversation, but the software doesn’t appear to be recognizing they are photos to show up in that contact screen.

It's great to hear that you tracked down the likely culprit, jarred49.

It might be a good idea to Get Support from Apple directly from here so they can work with you on ways that this can potentially be corrected.

Take care.

Hello jarred49,

To the best of your knowledge, was this specific just to certain contacts? If so, are they related at all such as being the same contact with different SIM numbers, or synced from an external site such as an email account contact?

Thanks!

So after playing with it for a while, I discovered that the real problem is the photos sent out and in get labeled by ios16 in the same way and thus when you look back through the photos sent and received with a contact most of them don’t show up as they all might be titled image000000, or something similar. With iOS 16’s new duplicate image feature I believe it is mistaking those photos as the same photo as they have the same title. If I save the photos on my phone with a different title “image000001” etc, then the software recognizes them as different photos again and they show up in the sent/received photos of each contact. But it is very annoying to have to save every photo someone sends you just so that they show up in the sent/received photos section of messages.
