So I updated to iOS 16 and can no longer control my Apple TV‘s volume using the iPhone remote app. My Onkyo stereo system worked with the remote for years. Now it simply doesn’t work. There are no volume icons that appear when using the remote app. Example pressing the up or down buttons only shows the phones volume not the Apple TV volume. The stereo is set up correctly in Apple TV.

This broke in tvOS 16 but there's a workaround. If you hold down the side button on the iPhone while using the Remote app to invoke Siri, the volume buttons will start working again.

This workaround stopped working for me with the latest updates (iOS 16.0.3, tvOS 16).

Nope, this should continue working unless you reboot the Apple TV.

That’s what I mean; every time I turn on my Apple TV. Like, every day when I turn it all on? We’ll see, just going to be really annoying compared to iOS/tvOS 15 and previous
No, not every time you turn on the TV. Your Apple TV doesn't reboot when you turn off the TV and turn it back on. It just goes to sleep.
OK, well now you can update to iOS 16.1 and tvOS 16.1 to fix it.
It fixed it for me. But now anytime I’m near my Apple TVs which is like always my phones volume rocked just adjusts the TV volume not the phone.
Once everything was updated to 16.1 and restarted again, volume controls have been solid since.
