Why is my mac not backing up on the selected time machine

My macbook pro will backup on time machine every now and then. I can't understand why sometimes it does and other times it doesn't

Time Machine will back up to its external backup drives when your Mac is connected to power. When it is not connected to power it continues to create Local Snapshots on the source volume, which are fully restorable complete system backups. They are written to the backup drive when it becomes available.
