ios16 Bluetooth Audio is not working

Recently updated both my Iphone 13 and iphone 11 Pro to ios16 and Bluetooth audio no longer works on either device.

Carplay works fine - Waze works fine and gives directions audibly but phone audio or playing music from the phone, soundcloud, or spotify does not work at all.

I've tried:

restarting phone several times
removed and re-added the device from both the phone and the car
checked audio volume

Being that I've tried this on two vehicles with two different phones leads me to believe that this is not likely a hardware issue.

This usually does the trick but not this time. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I’m having a problem where the phone grabs the audio on the car and doesn’t release. The car shows the handset icon and the car displays as though there is a call I progress, but you can’t terminate the non-existent call. This happens in two cars. Have tried restarting and removing and adding back the connections.

I might not even be asking the car to use them phone for this to happen. The result is that it switches off all other car audio. Only solution I’ve found is to switch off the phone’s Bluetooth when in the car.

This is on IOS 16 and 16.0.2, iPhone 12.
