Text messages missing and out of order after ios 16 update

I upgraded to ios 16 and now my text messages are messed up. The bubble on the message app says I have 37 unread texts, but when I click into any text message in the top left it says I only have 21 unread messages. They are also out of date order. For example, I have a text that says it's from 7/18/19 but when I click into it the date of the last message is actually 3/3/17. There are several texts like this. I turned iMessage on and off, turned off the phone - nothing is working. I have not tried a hard reset. How do I fix this? I JUST got the 13 Pro two months ago. C'mon Apple....
