Should sidecar work in clamshell mode?

Before when lid of the MacBook is closed, the extended display on iPad turns into main display of the MacBook automatically, now the sidecar on iPad just disappears.

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 13.0

I found a clunky and annoying workaround, hopefully it helps other people who just want to get their work done. Steps:

  • Connect MacBook to power
  • Connect iPad to MacBook via usb-c cable
  • Connect iPad to MacBook via Sidecar
  • Close MacBook (Sidecar will seemingly disconnect)
  • Unplug power cable from MacBook
  • Plug power cable back into MacBook
  • Press any key on bluetooth keyboard
  • Your MacBook Lock Screen should appear on your iPad, in Clamshell mode

This is of course not ideal, but if you’re someone who just needs a versatile workspace, it’s better than nothing. And if anybody is wondering, upgrading to Ventura did not solve the issue.
