iCloud Storage taking up lots of space on my hard drive.

I have purchased 4TB of iCloud Storage to keep my local hard drive clean yet iCloud Drive is taking up 250GB of space on my hard drive. Why is that and is there something I can do to keep Cloud Storage in the iCloud?

You can only purchase 2TB of cloud storage unless you also subscribe to 2TB Apple One.

Anything in the cloud is also on your device. iCloud is primarily a synchronization service, not offline storage.
