Macbook Pro needs hard restart some mornings

Hello,

Sometimes in the morning my Macbook Pro needs a hard restart. This is happening more often. The screen is blank and there is no response when I touch the ID start key. The "ESC" key is an option in the touch bar but nothing happens when I press it. The screen stays dark. In the end, I have to do a hard restart by pressing the start key. Is this caused by an automatic update overnight? Does anyone know what I can do about it? Thanks!

Hello AlfieBB,

When your Mac freezes and restarts, do you see any kind of alert? For example "Your Mac restarted due to a problem". If so, then we'll want to review these steps: If your Mac restarts and a message appears - Apple Support

Additionally, let's run a diagnostic test on your Mac with the steps from: Use Apple Diagnostics to test your Mac - Apple Support

Prepare your Mac

  1. Shut down your Mac.
  2. Disconnect all external devices except keyboard, mouse, display, Ethernet connection (if applicable), and connection to AC power.
  3. Make sure that your Mac is on a hard, flat, stable surface with good ventilation.

Start Apple Diagnostics

Determine whether you're using a Mac with Apple silicon, then follow the appropriate steps:

Apple silicon

  1. Turn on your Mac and continue to press and hold the power button as your Mac starts up.
  2. Release when you see the startup options window, which includes a gear icon labeled Options.
  3. Press Command (⌘)-D on your keyboard.

Intel processor

  1. Turn on your Mac, then immediately press and hold the D key on your keyboard as your Mac starts up.
  2. Release when you see a progress bar or you're asked to choose a language.

Let us know what it reports!

Thanks for trying that step and the additional information, AlfieBB. It’s appreciated.

If your Mac doesn't turn on - Apple Support -- Since your Mac isn’t turning on all the way the first time you try to start it, please work through these steps and test the issue after each one.

If you reach step 5, the provided link is this one: If your Mac starts up to a blank screen - Apple Support This will explain how to use Disk Utility to repair the start-up disk.

Please let us know the results when you're able.

All the best.

Thanks for your reply. Running Diagnostics didn't work.

Either I press the D as soon as the restart Apple appears and the chime sounds and nothing happens.

Or I press the D with the restart button, the Apple appears and then it freezes on the screen and nothing happens until I do a hard shut down.

To answer your first question, when the Mac is off in the morning, there is no alert. The screen is off and I have to press and hold the restart button. It now takes at least one minute of pressing the start key to launch. Sometimes I have to press and hold the start key several times to restart, which is nerve-wracking. The time is getting longer. My Macbook Pro is from 2016, running ios 12.6.

Thanks for any help!
