the title of this is an old thread. the question was asked but no response. I'm experiencing this issue and it has not been corrected, apparently.
does anyone know of the quickest way to correct this problem in already recorded HDR video?

So, video taken in HDR on my iPhone can't be represented properly on my M1 MacBook Pro and that isn't a bug? Call it what you will, it's certainly not a feature and should be corrected, either by making changes to the MacBook Pro or removing the "feature" from the iPhone.

I have used Final Cut Pro to convert such HDR/HLG to SDR video that plays everywhere.

Every MacBook Pro and MacBook Air that has been introduced in 2018 or after should be capable of supporting HDR video.
My Mac mini 2018 and LG Ultrafine 4K support HDR but my old iPad Pro 9,7" 1st generation 2016 does not. I have converted some iPhone HLG clips to SDR so they can be viewed on the old iPad.

It hasn't been corrected because it is not a bug. It is just that the device you are trying to play the video on doesn't recognise and can't deal with the HDR video.
Solution for existing videos is (as pointed out by Matti) to convert to non HDR.
And, if I don't have FCP to convert to video that "plays everywhere"? I fail to see the utility of shooting in HDR on my iPhone if it creates video that won't "play everywhere".
What software are you using to play the video on the Mac?
What version of phone do you have? What IOS, and What MacOS?
