For reference...

Updating an iPhone:

What to Update: Installed apps and the iOS.

How to do so...

A. Verify Compatibility:

Identify your iPhone model. The first thing that comes to mind in incompatibility being the culprit. So, confirm the model of your iPhone. If iPhone model is incompatible with iOS 16, then it is because you iPhone does not meet the hardware requirements for this iOS version(s).

B. If Compatible...

1. Back Up First:

IMPORTANT: If you have an option to update, however, then be certain you backup your iPhone first. That way, you will have something to restore your iPhone from should anything go wrong with the update

then...

2. Proceed with the Update:

Note: The post is there for reference, when it comes to updating and iPhone.

Implying that there may be a way around the very simple problem is likely to be confusing.

Have you been using the phone up until now? You can continue to do whatever you could do on the phone yesterday or last week. The built in apps should continue to work just fine. So, no, it's not completely useless.

You are certainly free to purchase a new phone if the iPhone 6, which was released, if I recall correctly, 8 years ago, no longer meets your needs. The iPhone 6 has no trade-in value with Apple. However, you might find a third party company or an individual who is willing to give you something for it.
