Is it safe to delete my iPhone backup?

Hello, my old iPhone backup is taking up the majority of space on iCloud….if I delete the old backup will the photos and everything stay on my current phone I’m using? I plan to back it up again as soon as I delete the old backup just in case but wanted to make sure I can delete the old one in order to update the old backup?
