Will deleting the voice memo app on my iPad make me lose all my memos?

Hello,

I am surprised by this, but I could not find this question on here, so either I'm bad at looking or it wasn't asked.

I want to delete the voice memo app from my iPad. I don't use it on there, and I have a lot of memos taking up nearly 40 GB of my 64 GB total.

However, now that I have deleted it from the screen, with the message prompted saying that any memo synced to the cloud would remain there, I see that the space is still taken up. I assume I have to hit "delete app" from the storage part of settings, but the warning message reads something like "doing this will delete all the data associated to this iPad. This is irreversible" (I'm translating cause my iPad is set to French). However, I am not sure if deleting the app of my iPad will definitely keep all my memos over on my iPhone, and, most importantly, on the iCloud server, because I do not want to lose everything, so I thought I would check before risking to make a big mistake.

Thank you!

Hello Nierninwa,

It looks like there is confusion here between the Voice memos app and the Voice Memos app data(the actual recordings). When you delete apps from one device, it will never be deleted from another device. With that being said, deleting the Voice Memos app from your iPad will not delete it from your other Apple devices.

Here's how to delete an app:

Delete apps on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch

When you turn on iCloud for an app, its information is safely stored in iCloud and automatically kept in sync across your devices. When you turn it off, the app will no longer connect with iCloud, so your data will exist only on your device. You can choose which apps on your device you'd like to use iCloud, or turn off iCloud completely.

Change your iCloud settings

That means, if you would like to remove your voice memo recordings from your iPad, and keep them on all other devices, you'll have to turn off iCloud for Voice Memo on your iPad. This way deleting them off your iPad won't delete them from your other devices. (iCloud keeps all devices in sync)

Here's how to turn it off on your iPad:

Tap on Settings > [your name] > iCloud. Look for Voice Memos and toggle it off.

We hope this information is useful. Kind regards.

Nierninwa,

Thanks for the screenshot. To clarify the information previously provided, when navigating to Settings > [your name] > iCloud and viewing Voice Memos is the feature on or off? Also, do you use this feature with any other devices.

As previously stated and found here: Make a recording in Voice Memos on iPad - Apple Support

"If Voice Memos is turned on in iCloud settings or preferences, your recording is saved in iCloud and appears automatically on all your devices where you’re signed in with the same Apple ID."

However, to only remove the content to free storage on your iPad, you'll want to be sure the iCloud feature is off and you see and have access to the data on a different device before removing and turning this option off.

If you're still having issues or need further clarification, reach out to Apple Support directly to assist.

Hello,

This would not be an issue if there was not something strange happening with the app from the iPad Storage in General settings.

I am attaching two screenshots (with the iPad set in English for ease of understanding)

If the app appears like it has been offloaded once I click on it to see why it is still using 38.41 GB (despite, once again, me having deleted it as linked here: Delete apps on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch - Apple Support; which should have deleted all its data) the app shows as if 1) it was not offloaded and 2) there is still a "Delete App" option

And if I click on "Delete App" a warning message appears (see screenshot below) telling me it will delete all the documents and data and I just want to be sure that doing this will not mean that the data will be gone from iCloud.

Thank you!

Best,

Alice

Hello Nierninwa,

Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities. We see you have some questions about your Voice Memos, and we'd like to help. When you delete the application, the memos should still be saved where you backed them up, as you can restore from that backup at a later date. The following link can walk through how to delete Voice Memos: Edit or delete a recording in Voice Memos on iPhone - Apple Support

Let us know if this helps.
