How can I back up files when my iMac won’t boot

Is there a way to transfer or back up files from my G5 before I run the disk utility? I don’t want to lose my photos and music from older I phone backups. I’m getting a flashing question mark when I turn it on. Can I use an old start up disk CD to re boot or will that re format the whole computer?
