Apple TV 4K remote unable to control display volume

a few hours ago, the volume control buttons on my apple tv 4K remote suddenly stopped working, and i haven’t been able to control my television’s volume ever since.

however, i tested it with a samsung universal remote and the volume control works fine through it, ruling a broken IR receiver out as the issue.

has anybody else experienced this? i’ve been using this apple tv ever since i bought it back in may of last year, and only just now has this cropped up.
