Searching for Music on Apple TV

After years of no trouble, the music search function on my Apple TV is not working.


Before:

  1. I type in a search term, such as Dave Matthews Band Live Trax.
  2. ATV shows some common search terms, e.g. Dave Matthews Live or Live Trax.
  3. I select one.
  4. Results appear.


Now.

  1. I repeat step (1) above.
  2. *Sometimes* some search terms appear.
  3. Selecting one yields... nothing.


I end up streaming from my phone, but this is not helpful at parties.


Any suggestions? All software is up to date. Thanks.

Generally, adding more search terms here narrows down the results. Fewer terms will give more diverse results. Do consider finding content in two steps: keyword search first for e.g. artist or album name, then select from the results to find what you sought.

  • Be aware of the Apple Music|Your Library selector. That is where the search is done.
  • If no suggestions are shown yet, then you may need to highlight and select the button with the magnifying glass and the search keywords, directly below the on-screen keyboard.

Just typing “dave m” in Search already suggests Dave Matthews Band for me. Choose that artist, then on the artist page, scroll down to Live Albums.

Typing “dave matthews live” gives many results, including several volumes from the Live Trax series. But also other albums.

Typing “dmb live trax” gives live albums from the Live Trax series for Album results.
