$150 Apple Card

I recently bought a MacBook Pro 13'' and got a $150 Apple Gift Card with the student discount bundle. I'm confused on how it's a discount, because either way I have to pay $12.50 every month for the gift card plus the monthly MacBook price. Can someone explain that to me? Also, was there a way for me to get the student discount without getting the gift card? I just don't see the purpose of paying for a gift card + MacBook when I could have just paid in full the first time without the discount.

The total of the two billings is the price of the MacBook Pro. They bill for the gift card and then reduce the price of the MacBook Pro by $150 ($150 less than the educational price). Your payments in total are what they would be for a MacBook Pro education price but you got both a MacBook Pro and a gift card.
