How to use trash can functions on iMac running unsupported version of software

I have iMac running High Sierra. I have the trash can icon but can't do anything but send trash to it. How can I empty and see what I have put in trash? I'm not the smartest user but please help me

iMac 21.5″, macOS 10.13

Double clicking on it should open a Finder Window to it's contents.

Right clicking on it should give options to Open Trash or Empty Trash.
