Lag when swiping between full screen apps and desktop

I just bought a new MacBook Pro 14 with the M1 Pro chip and noticed a lag while using it normally. I saw a few other people post about this issue as well and I tried the responses on their forums but none of the provided solution options worked, so I decided to post my own.

The issue goes:

When I swipe from my desktop to a full-screen app (mostly google chrome or safari), there is a noticeable lag after I get to the app (and vice-versa).

An example:

  1. I have an instance of Google Chrome open in full screen and I have a finder window open on my desktop.
  2. I swipe from my desktop to the Chrome window opened in full screen.
  3. I immediately try to open a new tab using the keyboard shortcut (CMD + T).
  4. Instead of a new tab opening in Chrome, a new finder window opens on my desktop.

When I swipe back to the desktop, I noticed that the right half of my menu bar at the top will be blank for about half a second before all the menu items will load (battery, Bluetooth, wifi, etc.). The left side loads just fine (with the little Apple logo).

On one forum that I read, someone commented saying to start the MacBook in safe mode or try a different account. I tried both options and the same issues persist in both settings.

Has anyone been able to solve this? I bought this laptop literally a few days ago so it's brand new, and it's a little frustrating to have these small issues on such a nice laptop (never experience this on my old 2018 Intel MacBook Pro that I'm upgrading from). Any help would be appreciated.

Running the latest macOS at the time of writing (macOS Monterey 12.5.1).

MacBook Pro 14″, macOS 12.5

Hello hhy19,

We would like to see how we can help you with your Mac running slower than expected while leaving full screen. Does this issue occur with any other app, or only when using Google Chrome? Thank you, please open Activity Monitor from Finder > Applications > Utilities > Activity Monitor. Select the CPU tab. Select the "% CPU" column, and look for any application that has taken over the CPU. Are there any apps using a large amount of the CPU when this happens?

Cheers.

Hi Nicholas_B2,

Thanks for the response! I did what you suggested and checked the activity monitor, it shows that no application is taking up a large amount of CPU when this issue occurs. I have roughly 90% of the CPU idle.

Google Chrome would occasionally take up to 15-20% of CPU usage, but this issue occurs with Safari as well in full screen.
