Pending purchase in App Store

I just loaded an iTunes gift card onto my sons iPad and he has made a purchase. The purchase amount has been deducted from his balance but the actual transaction is ‘pending’ in purchase history. Usually these purchases go through straight away. Would there be any reason why this is different? Thanks.
