Pictures in Message Conversation

I got a new phone this past Saturday (5 days ago). I restored my data from my latest backup (the morning of) onto my new phone. Everything is there.

This morning, I just realized that when I go to the “details section” of any iMessage/text conversation, only a handful of photos show up under the photos section. If I scroll up in any particular conversation, the photos are in the thread. They just don’t show up in the photos section.

Again, my phone was restored 5 days ago, & the “messages indexing” message is no longer there, so everything has finished transferring onto my phone.

I would really like help figuring out how to get that photo summary back. Thanks!

Thanks so much for letting us know.

Just to confirm, is this happening with all conversations, or only conversations with certain contacts?

Are you using the steps outlined in the following link to access photos and videos shared with you in Messages? View photos and videos shared with you on iPhone

When a friend shares photos and videos with you using the Messages app, you can easily find them in the Shared with You section in the Photos app . (Automatic Sharing and Photos must be turned on in Settings > Messages > Shared with You, and your friend must be in your Contacts.)

1. Tap For You, then scroll down to Shared with You.

2. Do any of the following:

• Tap a photo to view it in full screen, save it to your library, share it, or delete it.

• Tap See All to view all photos shared with you.

• Tap the name of the person who shared the photo, then reply to them using the Messages app.

You can also tap Library, then tap All Photos to see photos and videos shared with you in Messages. These photos and videos have a chat bubble in the bottom-left corner of the thumbnail. Tap the thumbnail to share the photo or video, save it to your library, or delete it. To hide photos and videos shared with you in Messages, tap , then tap Your Photos Only.

Thank you for your response. I had tried restarting the phone already, & I tried again after you suggested it. No change. My pictures before August 25 are still in the conversation if you scroll up, but they are completely missing from the summary in “details.”

Hey AmandaBerliner,

Thanks for letting us know this appears to be just an issue on the iPhone's side.

Take a look at your storage space on the device to make sure that you have adequate storage available. Here's how to check that: How to check the storage on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch - Apple Support. If the storage space is low, follow these steps to free up space: Delete music, movies, and TV shows from your device - Apple Support. We ask you to check because sometimes low storage can cause these kinds of content issues.

If there isn't an issue with storage, have you tried connecting to a different network with the iPhone to see if the photos load? Network issues can sometimes prevent the loading of a collection of images like this.

Thanks for taking the time to respond, Brittany.

It is happening with every single conversation. I have the “Shared with you” feature on (seen both under settings & my individual conversation details). However, the “Shared with you” section doesn’t even appear in my photos app.

Sidebar, I can see all the photos in the details of my iMessage conversations on my Macbook. This seems to be just an iPhone issue vs. an iCloud issue; & it began as soon as I bought my new iPhone & restored all my data. At least I know the content exists on my phone, but it just stinks not being able to access it without scrolling all the way up (in some cases, I cannot realistically scroll that far back).

Begin by restarting your iPhone using the steps found here:

Restart your iPhone - Apple Support

"How to restart your iPhone X, 11, 12, or 13

Press and hold either volume button and the side button until the power-off slider appears.
Drag the slider, then wait 30 seconds for your device to turn off. If your device is frozen or unresponsive, force restart your device.
To turn your device back on, press and hold the side button (on the right side of your iPhone) until you see the Apple logo."
