Time Machine Issue

Have been successfully running Time Machine twice a week backing up my iMac files to a Seagate External Hard Drive attached via USB port. Got a message today that scheduled backup could not complete and that files could not be backed up to hard drive possibly due to anti-virus software. I have had Norton also running for last 2 years with no problem. I completely turned off Norton, restarted and requested Time Machine to do back-up but got sane error message. Did research and found out about the issue of having an “.inprogress” file in the back-up folder used by Time Machine. I do have such a file created today I assume from a failed backup attempt. I tried delete this file using finder but when I attempt to move to trash, it requests my admin password and when I enter it, it gives me an error message saying I can’t move to trash because it may be locked or blocked from access and to check using Get Info. I checked and the fije is not locked and I don’t believe access is blocked. Can someone please tell me a full proof way to delete this inprogress file from the Time Machine backup folder? Or more importantly, how can I get Time Machine doing scheduled backups again to my external hard drive? Thanks.

1) Norton is bad news and you need to completely uninstall it from your iMac following the developers instructions.

macOS has built in security and does not need any help from third party AV, Cleaning or Optimizing ware.

see > macOS - Security - Apple

2) Accessing, moving or deleting Time Machine backups via Finder or other software is a big NO NO and in most

cases, this blunder will force you to completely reformat the external drive and start new backups.

My advise at this point is to,

1) disconnect and set the Time Machine drive aside.

2) fully uninstall Norton as per the developers instructions.

3) start up the iMac in Safe Mode following by a normal restart.

please see > How to use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support

4) reconnect the Time Machine backup drive, reformat it and start new backup.

Thanks. Though I had some trepidation about losing all my previous backups on the hard drive due to the reformat, I followed your instructions and Time Machine us now preceding with a new backup. I’m not sad to have Norton off my machine since I have periodically had issues with it. The one question I have is regarding your comment that Apple’s built in security stuff on Mac provides adequate protection. I have a 2017 iMac and am on 12.5.1 OS, dies your comment apply even for my older machine and if so, are there particular settings and options I should set in Preferences now that I don’t have Norton Security? Thanks.
