iCloud Download to MacBook Pro Fails with Error 36

Hi,

I can copy files from my iCloud to my MacBook Pro without any problems. However, when I try to copy (download) directories from my iCloud to my MacBook Pro, the copy fails with error -36. This happens every time. Also, if I try to copy a directory from, say, my iCloud desktop folder to my iCloud download folder, I also get error -36.

Any ideas on. how to fix this mess?

Thanks.

Hi there jtjbt20x,

We'd like to learn more to see how we can help. There should typically be a more detailed message included when you see an error code on your MacBook Pro. What exactly does the error say, word for word?

If you can’t move or copy a file or folder, you might need to change its permissions settings. You might also need to change permissions settings for the disk, server, or folder where you want to move the item.

Keeping that information in mind, have you checked permissions for the content you're trying to copy? Learn more here: If you can’t move or copy an item on Mac

Send over these details, and we'll take a closer look from there.

Thanks!

jtjbt20x,

Are you trying to use an external storage device for the actions, or are you just using the internal storage of the Mac?

If it's just the internal storage being used, some steps that you can try will include testing the issue in safe mode as well as in a new Admin user account on the Mac. These will help to isolate it down further.

Setting up another Admin account: Set up users, guests, and groups on Mac - Apple Support

Safe mode: Start up your Mac in safe mode - Apple Support

It may also help to try running First Aid on the internal drive, which this page can help with: How to repair a Mac disk with Disk Utility - Apple Support

Cheers.

However, when I try to copy (download) directories from my iCloud to my MacBook Pro, the copy fails with error -36.

For what reason you are trying to disturb internal files , these are not be copied and pasted in normal working Mac .

In your case you had run first aid from disk utility , the file system exist code should not be 8 , a green check mark should appear saying verified Repair a storage device in Disk Utility on Mac - Apple Support

Note : erase the hard drive and reinstall Mac OS , running safe mode , new admin account is very basic and will not work in long run .

Hi, thanks for the reply!

The error message is "The Finder can’t complete the operation because some data in “” can’t be read or written.

(Error code -36)" This happens when I try to copy/download directories but if I copy/download individual files, it works fine.

Apple Support had me change all the permissions as a test before they ghosted me twice on return phone calls, so I gave up on them. So much for Apple Care+.

Thanks,

Brian

Hello jtjbt20x,

Error code 36 relates to actions in the Finder, such as moving, copying, or deleting files. It usually means that the Finder can’t read some or all of the data in the file.

Let's try the following steps and the file that is hidden should appear.

In Finder, click your hard drive under Locations, then open your Macintosh HD folder. Press Command + Shift + . (period) to make the hidden files appear.

Let us know how it goes.

Thanks!

I can see some hidden files and directories. For instance, under the username directory, there is a directory named desktop and another named documents. Each has a hidden copy and a regular copy. I tried deleting a hidden copy and it immediately came back. There are also a bunch of other hidden directories in my iCloud drive.

What should I do?

Hi,

Support had me do those steps. I'm trying to copy from iCloud to my internal drive on my MacBook Pro M1.

Safe boot mode made no difference. With a new test account, it appeared to work, but I need the files in my account, not in the test account.

I ran Disk Utility in safe boot mode and in recovery mode but got a bunch of errors that Support didn't think that matteredt. The errors include a bunch of error like this:

"error: doc-id tree: record exists for doc-id 80397, file-id 53547195 but no node references this doc-id"

"Performing deferred requests"

"error: Unable to perform deferred repairs without full space verification"

"error: Try running fsck against the entire APFS container instead of a volume"

"The volume /dev/rdisk3s5 could not be verified completely"

"File system check exit code is 8"

"Restoring the original state found as mounted"

"File system verify or repair failed : (-69845)"

I ran Repair against all levels in the Disk Utility window. Always the Data item failed with these errors, but passed when other items were run.

Thanks,

Brian
