ios mail has always been my go-to for mail on my iPhone. Since the update to 15.6.1… messages take an extraordinary amount of time to download to the point that it’s not useable. I constantly get a loading screen when I try to open mail and it seems like it’s always “checking for mail.” Never had this issue before. Seeing if anyone has a solution.

Perform the following…
A. Use a New App Password:
Do you use an App Password? If so, try a new App Password. Sometimes, changes (i.e. updates) are made to the device, and then mail server syncing becomes an issue (which is what a new App Password it intended to fix). B. Report this to Apple:
Do your Part: Provide Apple with feedback on this, letting them know about this issue. Apple may not get back to you directly, but the more feedback they receive on this, the more they will know what is occurring, and what bug fixes to include in updates to come.
If you have any VPN, VPN based ad blocker or security/antivirus apps, remove them completely.
If that does not fix it, remove all the accounts and add them back.

removed and re-added. Worked for about 10 minutes now doing again.
