How do I connect my new watch w an iPhone 12?

My new watch won’t connect to my iPhone 12 I says it must have iOS 6 or later but my phone says it has a much newer ios version

Please try this: On your iPhone, select Settings > General > Software Update, then update the iPhone if you are prompted to do so. You want to make sure you are on the latest update.

After you do that, close all the apps and power the iPhone off. Wait a few minutes then power it back on. Try again to set up the Apple Watch. Let us know if this resolves the issue.
