bluetooth earphones connected to iphone but sound comes from internal speaker not earphones

I have connected a pair of Beats Flex earphones to my iPhone 13 Pro (iOS 15.6.1). In Settings, the earphones are listed as connected. But when I try to play music in the Music app, the sound comes through the internal speakers not the earphone. I have shut the iPhone down, restarted and reconnected the earphones, but still the same problem. When I connect the earphones, it says they are 100% charged. How can I get the sound to come through the earphones?

Restarting the iPhone was a great start with trouble-shooting!


Here's a few suggestions:


You might want to check that you are only connecting earphones to one device at a time

(Eg may not be switching between multiple devices.)


See if turn off / turn on bluetooth helps


See if the audio plays through the earphones in airport mode


Could an open app (eg Game with audio) be "over-riding" the earphones audio


Apple support have an article online that may help:
