excel file on icloud drive is disappeared when I edit on my Windows laptop

When I try to open the file by choosing it from the list in Home, Excel says it can't find the file.

It seems that both of these things have happened.

1) The file was moved or copied to Trash. It opened when I rescued it.

2) The file was renamed with an apparently random string of eight numbers & letters, with no extension. I found two files named like this, both of the correct size. One opened with Excel when I renamed it, one could not be opened.

The first time this disappearing happened I assumed it was my mistake. Then it happened again - this time I saw the filename disappear from the list in Windows File Explorer.

I have other files that don't behave this way, so is it a document setting?

Windows, Windows 10

Hi nowhiz,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities. We understand that you're having an issue with the names of your files in iCloud Drive. We'd like to help.

Just to confirm, this is an issue you're seeing with files that you've created in Excel only. Is that correct? Do you have any updates available for your PC or app? That's always a good first step to check.

Have you been able to successfully upload these in the past? Check out this resource to make sure you're following the steps to add those files: View, add, or remove iCloud Drive files in iCloud for Windows - Apple Support

Add files to iCloud Drive

1. On your Windows computer, open File Explorer or Windows Explorer, then click iCloud Drive in the Navigation pane.
2. Drag files to iCloud Drive.

You can access these files on all your devices that have iCloud Drive turned on. See Set up iCloud Drive on all your devices in the iCloud User Guide.

Note: Some apps, like Pages, Numbers, and Keynote, have their own folders in iCloud Drive. You can only upload a file into an app’s folder if the app can open the file.

Let us know how that goes and we'll continue from here.

Take care!

Hey nowhiz,

Thanks for the update. If it change the original file and created a second file, it may have been updated or in the process of updating if changes were made. This article has some more information on When changes to your files upload to iCloud.

When changes to your files upload to iCloud
The amount of time it takes for your changes to upload to iCloud depends on the app you're using. Pages, Numbers, and Keynote regularly upload files to iCloud so you don’t lose any changes. Other apps upload your files to iCloud only after you save them to the iCloud Drive folder. To see your saved files on a Mac, go to Finder > iCloud Drive. On your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, go to the Files app. On a PC with iCloud for Windows, go to File Explorer > iCloud Drive.

If you still don't see the latest changes or you see an "in-progress change" icon or the iCloud icon  in the notification area (system tray), try to save a new document to the iCloud Drive folder. Then check the iCloud Drive folder to see if the changes appear.

If it is isolated to this one file, how often does it happen?

If you duplicate the document, does the same thing happen with the new file?

Do you use other devices to make changes to files in iCloud?

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities. Have a nice day.

Thank you.

I have the iCloud app installed on my Windows laptop. I've been using it for some years.

So far I believe this one Excel file is the only file to suffer this.

The file was uploaded to iCloud some time ago, and I have modified it previously using the same machine.

The file was not in an app-dedicated folder. It was not in any folder.

I have Office 365, and Windows 10 is set to auto-update, so all the apps are up to date.

It is only this one file, and I have only opened it on my PC. I moved it to iCloud because I wanted access to it on my phone as well. But that is not working out.

It seems to be happening each time I edit the file.

I think the file is not actually disappearing, but iCloud is messing with it. The filename is changed to an apparently random string with no file extension. When I change the filename and try to open it Windows says it cannot find it.
