My music files for iTunes are located on a Synology NAS and currently I have a file folder named "Album Art" that is located on the hard drive of my iMac that has all the album art. Can I simply move the Album Art folder to the NAS without breaking the links from the song file to the album art?
It seems having the album art and music files on the same device makes sense, but I don't want to have issues as I have a large music library.

No. The location of the Album Art folder with respect to the iTunes Library.itl file should remain unchanged. iTunes won't know or understand if you move it, but it will recreate the folder and attempt to rebuild it. For efficiency it should not be on the NAS.
Note: If/when you choose to update to Catalina or later you will find that the Music library no longer relies on this cache, however it creates a new one with a different structure in a hidden preference folder for your account.
