Apple Wallet on my iPhone 13 doesn't have any section to add loyalty cards.

apple wallet (at least the one on my Iphone 13) doesn't have any section to add loyalty cards, only credit cards and transit cards. Instructions describe a set to add cards and choose between credit cards and loyalty passes, but I don't see any such choice or any mention in wallet.

Wow, ok. So I looked at CVS and scoured the website and don't find anyting about adding to wallet. I also looked in the app, but the whole point of having apple wallet house the card, is you dont' have to goop up your iphone with all those clunky apps, so your iphone runs faster.

Am I making any sense here?

Google pay has an easy way to add your loyalty cards right in the google pay app without all this kludgy digging around. I would have thought with wallet being a better product in may ways, this same feature would be a no brainer. Plus apple support instructions says they have this functioanlity. Or so this says

Add and use passes in Wallet on iPhone - Apple Support

Why is this so far behind google pay in this one regard?

Sure.

It varies widely company to company as to how it’s implemented.

But in general:

One either browses to the company’s web site or installs and launches the company’s app with the iOS device.

One authenticates to the company’s website or app normally using his/her iOS device.

Generally these sites or apps have a screen available where you can “see” an image of your loyalty card.

On this same page there generally is an icon with the verbiage “Add to Apple Wallet”

One clicks the icon and follows the instructions - a few clicks - to electronically place the card into the device’s wallet.

I don’t at all disagree w/ you at all, although I can’t begin to comment on Google’s implementation.

I CAN say from personal experience that for CVS, installation of their iOS app is a required precursor to installing their loyalty card into Apple’s iOS wallet.

I also see nothing in Apple’s documentation specifically about “loyalty cards.”

A “pass” is not considered the same as a loyalty card. (I’m not trying to play semantics)

I’ll use United Airlines (UAL) ONLY as an illustrative example.

Anyone can purchase a UAL ticket, via any means and when checking-in online for their flight can add a Boarding Pass to their mobile wallet via the web interface and go flying.

However, in order to install a UAL “MilesPlus” loyalty card (UAL’s frequent flyer program) a MilesPlus member must first install UAL’s iOS app.

After all, it’s UAL’s Loyalty program; so the implementation mechanics are entirely their decision.

Similarly, transit cards and sports tickets are not treated as “Loyalty Cards” but are more akin to pre-paid “Boarding Passes.”

I’m the first to admit that the differentiation can be subtle.

As of right now (9/29/22) United iOS app does not have an option to add Mileage Plus loyalty card to Apple wallet.

They supported this for years, but it's currently missing. My old card was expired, so I deleted the expired card from Apple wallet and tried to add it back. I could bring up my current card in UAL's app, but there was no "add to Apple Wallet" option.

I concur w/ your observation.

This isn’t an “iOS 16 issue” either; as I’m still on 15.7.

Suggest we provide feedback to UAL as it clearly-dropped out in a fairly recent app update.

Interestingly, the United Club membership card still DOES have the “add-to-wallet” icon, AND I added UAL boarding passes to my wallet just last week …

… so it’s apparently a web page re-design oversight limited to the Miles Plus card section.
